Christchurch's Summer Event Schedule: A Guide to the City's Sizzling Season
Get ready for a sizzling summer in Christchurch, where free open-air concerts, plays, and live music fill the city's calendar. The Christchurch City Council's summer event program starts on New Year's Eve and continues through February, offering a diverse range of entertainment for all ages.
New Year's Eve Extravaganza
Kick off the new year with a bang! On December 31st, head to North Hagley Park for a family-friendly NYE Kids Countdown from 4-7 pm. Enjoy games, live music, dance battles, and a special confetti countdown at 7 pm. Then, from 8 pm, NYE25 takes over with live performances by Brad Staley, Dillastrate, and Kora, DJ Sambora's beats, and an epic fireworks display as the clock strikes midnight.
Go Live in the Gardens
On January 2nd, catch a brand-new free concert, 'Go Live in the Gardens,' from 1-4 pm at the Botanic Gardens Archery Lawn. Stellar* and The Mockers will perform, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Bring your friends, pack a picnic, and immerse yourself in Aotearoa's music scene.
Anthony Harper Summer Theatre
For a classic Christchurch summer experience, attend 'The Lord of the Rings in 90 Minutes' at the Botanic Gardens Archery Lawn. This comedy adaptation by Rollicking Entertainment features three actors and a musician on a journey to Middle Earth. The series runs from January 9th to 25th, with evening shows at 7 pm and weekend matinees at 4 pm.
Summer Sundays
On February 1st, 8th, and 22nd, spend your Sundays at the stunning Botanic Gardens Archery Lawn. Enjoy live music from 1-4 pm, featuring eight awesome bands. Bring your friends and family, chairs or picnic blankets, and maybe even your dancing shoes for a day of sun, shade, and great tunes.
Kite Day
On January 24th, it's time to paint the sky with color at Kite Day! New Brighton Beach becomes the canvas for a creative display of sky-high kites, cartoons, and shapes. Enjoy beach activities like swimming, sandcastle building, and picnicking from 12-4 pm.
Mitre10 Sparks
One of the most popular summer events, Mitre10 Sparks, returns with a special Valentine's Day-themed evening. On February 14th, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and special guest artists will perform a dazzling show with a contemporary and romantic edge. The night concludes with a grand fireworks finale, starting at 6.30 pm at North Hagley Park.
