In honor of the university's 60th anniversary, the Dinos Hall of Fame is inducting an incredible group of individuals and teams who have left an indelible mark on the athletic landscape. This year's class is a testament to the rich history and future potential of the university's sports programs.
Inductees: A Diverse Array of Talent
The Class of 2026 features a diverse range of athletes, coaches, and teams, each with their own unique story of success and impact. Let's dive into the remarkable careers of these inductees:
Ross Collett: A football legend, Collett was a star in the early days of the program. He was a two-time UCalgary Male Athlete of the Year, a conference all-star, and even drafted by the Calgary Stampeders. His defensive prowess and leadership on the field are legendary.
Sandy Drever: A true multi-sport athlete, Drever excelled in basketball, field hockey, and volleyball. She was named the Dinos Female Athlete of the Year in 1969 and led the women's volleyball team to their first-ever national championship. Her international representation and coaching achievements further solidify her place among the greats.
John Jenkins: Jenkins made history as the first All-Canadian in Dinos men's hockey. His leadership and skill helped deliver the program's first conference championship. A three-time conference all-star and team captain, Jenkins's success opened doors to professional tryouts, including with NHL teams.
Marilyn McNeil: A pioneer for women in sport, McNeil's impact extends far beyond the court. As an athlete, she was part of the 1966 conference champion women's basketball team and won the Margaret Southern Award. As a coach, she transformed the Dinos, leading them to a conference banner and national coach of the year honors. Her advocacy for women's sports and Title IX is an inspiration.
1965-66 Women's Basketball Team: This team set the bar high, claiming the first conference championship in program history. Dr. Jean Leiper's squad, featuring Hall of Famers Wendy Carson, Theresa Maxwell (Sekura), and Marilyn McNeil, embodied speed and toughness, paving the way for future success.
1965-66 Men's Basketball Team: One of the most accomplished men's basketball programs, this team established a culture of excellence that endures to this day. With Hall of Famer Wayne Thomas leading the way, they brought home the first of nine conference banners and a silver medal at the national championship.
