DIY CRT VR Headset: Reviving Vintage Tech for Virtual Reality (2026)

Unconventional VR Headset: A CRT Revolution

Are you ready to embark on a retro-futuristic journey?

Imagine a world where vintage technology meets cutting-edge innovation. In this realm, a custom virtual reality headset takes center stage, pushing the boundaries of what we thought was possible. But here's where it gets controversial... This VR headset isn't powered by modern displays; instead, it utilizes cathode ray tubes (CRTs), a technology that has largely faded into the annals of history.

[dooglehead], an intrepid DIY enthusiast, has crafted a masterpiece. By scavenging for the smallest CRT displays available, they've created a unique VR experience. The displays, originally from Sony Watchmans - compact, over-the-air black-and-white handheld TVs from the late 1900s - were modified to fit the headset. [dooglehead] had to devise a method to send video to these units, which originally lacked input connections. An FPGA was employed to split the video signal into two parts, one for each display.

The result? A side-by-side arrangement of the CRTs, attached to a Google Cardboard headset. An IMU tracks head rotation, while an off-the-shelf location tracker monitors the unit's motion in 3D space. Despite the exposed high voltage of the CRTs, the headset weighs only a few grams more than a modern HTC headset. Performance is surprisingly good, albeit with notable interlacing and focus issues.

While [dooglehead] isn't planning to replace their modern VR displays anytime soon, this project is a testament to the potential of unconventional technology. With rumors of a CRT revival circulating, it's a timely reminder to consider the environmental impact of discarding old CRTs. So, before you toss that old CRT, consider giving it a new lease of life. After all, who knows what innovative projects await?
