IMF Chief Clarifies AI Progress Admiration, Amidst Rank Row with Indian Minister
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva addressed a recent public exchange with India's IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, clarifying the organization's admiration for India's AI progress. In an interview with NDTV's Vishnu Som at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Georgieva emphasized the IMF's respect for India's advancements in reforms, digital infrastructure, and skilled IT labor.
The clarification came a day after Vaishnaw challenged the IMF's reported classification of India in a 'second grouping' of AI nations. The minister cited Stanford University rankings, which place India third globally in AI preparedness, arguing for India's top-tier status. Vaishnaw stated, 'Stanford places India at 3rd in the world for AI preparedness. I don't think your classification is correct.'
Georgieva downplayed the exchange, attributing it to a 'small hiccup' and blaming the moderator for misrepresenting the IMF's stance. She explained, 'The moderator was speculating. We believe India is a major contributor to AI development.'
Despite the disagreement, Georgieva praised India as a 'dynamic economy' and highlighted AI's potential to boost productivity and global growth, estimating a 0.8% increase. She expressed admiration for India's approach to AI, stating, 'With AI, it will only get better. I'm impressed with India's strategy to stay competitive.'
Georgieva's positive outlook on India's economic prospects remained unwavering, describing the country as a 'bright spot' in a challenging global economic environment. She concluded, 'I'm going to India, excited to be there.' Her attendance at the India-AI summit next month is expected to further emphasize the IMF's recognition of India's AI capabilities.
