Islam Makhachev Defends His Desire for Kamaru Usman: 'Usman Would Be the Hardest Fight for Me'
Islam Makhachev, the current UFC welterweight champion, has sparked debate by expressing his preference for facing Kamaru Usman in his first title defense. Makhachev's stance is rooted in the belief that Usman presents the ultimate challenge, despite the presence of other formidable contenders.
In an interview with Red Corner MMA, Makhachev elaborated on his reasoning. He argued that Usman, a former champion with an impressive record, deserves a chance to reclaim his title, even with the likes of Michael Morales, Ian Machado Garry, Carlos Prates, and the undefeated Shavkat Rakhmonov as hungry challengers.
Makhachev stated, 'I said I wanted to fight Kamaru Usman next. Although the media may doubt this fight, I believe Usman would dominate these up-and-coming fighters like Morales and Prates. They haven't faced the same level of competition yet.'
He further emphasized the potential for a highly anticipated and entertaining bout, given Usman's status as a former champion and his five successful title defenses. Makhachev's own impressive 16-fight win streak, tied with Anderson Silva's record, adds weight to his argument.
Usman, who shares management with Makhachev, dominated the welterweight division from 2019-2022, showcasing his prowess with five consecutive title defenses. However, a three-fight losing streak, including two title fights against Leon Edwards, temporarily halted his momentum. Makhachev believes Usman was poised for a title shot before his slump, making him a worthy contender.
Makhachev commented, 'Buckley was a contender. Usman dismantled him, and people have forgotten about Buckley. If Buckley had won, he would have been the top contender.'
As Makhachev continues to reign in the welterweight division, the UFC is expected to make a decision on his next opponent soon. With a lively division and multiple options, Makhachev remains confident in his decision, stating, 'I don't care who they offer me. I'm comfortable in this division and plan to stay for a long time.'
