Jon Meacham, a Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer, made an interesting appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" recently, where he shared his views on what he perceives as a significant "moral crisis" facing America during President Trump's current term in office.
Having earned the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography in 2009 with his acclaimed work "American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House," Meacham took to the stage not only to promote his latest book, "American Struggle: Democracy, Dissent and The Pursuit Of A More Perfect Union," but also to reflect on the current state of national affairs. When Colbert probed him about the present political moment, Meacham candidly replied, "Not much." He elaborated that the founding fathers foresaw periods of fear and lawlessness, suggesting that our personal desires and ambitions often overshadow our foundational principles. However, he admitted he wasn't sure they envisioned a situation quite like today's.
Meacham emphasized the critical importance of the Constitution's opening words: "We the people." He argued that the effectiveness of the Constitution hinges on the integrity of the electorate and those we elect to represent us. "I think we are indeed experiencing a moral crisis," he stated, expressing concern that many individuals have prioritized their personal interests over the constitutional values enshrined in the rule of law.

Later in the discussion, Meacham reflected on the character of the leaders we choose, pointing out, "If you ever wanted an example of why the character of the person you send to the Presidency of the United States matters, just look at the past 361 days, or however long it’s been." He highlighted issues such as Trump’s peculiar interest in acquiring Greenland and stressed that America's strength does not stem from geography alone.
"This nation was built on an idea," Meacham asserted. He referred to Jefferson’s claim in the Declaration of Independence that asserts "all men are created equal," which underscores the creed that binds Americans together through patriotism.
Moreover, Meacham reminded everyone that there are no guarantees regarding America's future. "We must recognize that this is a delicate undertaking," he warned. He encouraged viewers to reflect on the legacy they wish to leave behind, cautioning against becoming a generation that forgets the heroic spirit displayed by those who fought at Omaha Beach, stood at Gettysburg, and marched in Selma, all in the name of expanding the nation's ideals.
In closing, the acclaimed author remarked, "It’s not easy, but we must remember that this journey was never meant to be dictated by the whims and ego of a single individual."
