Rishabh Pant, India's star wicketkeeper-batter, has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand due to a side strain. The injury, diagnosed as an oblique muscle tear, occurred during a practice session in Vadodara, where Pant felt sudden discomfort in his right lateral abdominal area while batting in the nets. This setback comes as a blow to Pant, who was in excellent form, leading Delhi to the Vijay Hazare Trophy quarter-finals and amassing two fifties in six innings. However, his absence won't significantly impact India's ODI lineup, as KL Rahul, the designated wicketkeeper-batter, is already in the team. Dhruv Jurel, a promising young talent, will step in as Pant's replacement. Jurel, who has yet to make his ODI debut, has been in exceptional form in List A cricket, with six fifty-plus scores in his last seven innings, including two centuries for Uttar Pradesh. The injury means Pant will miss the first ODI in Vadodara, with the series continuing in Rajkot and Indore. The teams will then shift their focus to a five-match T20I series in Nagpur, Raipur, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, and Thiruvananthapuram, which will serve as a warm-up for the T20 World Cup in February-March. Neither Pant nor Jurel are part of India's T20I squad, indicating a strategic decision to rest them for the more demanding T20 format.
