A bold statement has been made by Sonny Bill Williams, the dual-code sports legend, igniting a fiery debate within the All Blacks camp. Williams, in a recent Instagram video, has called for a shake-up in the team's leadership, advocating for Ardie Savea to take the reins as captain.
"Scott Barrett is an exceptional player, but I believe Ardie Savea is the right choice for captain," Williams asserted. "He embodies the spirit and prestige the team needs moving forward. His achievements with Moana this year speak volumes."
Williams, who has extensive experience playing alongside both Savea and Barrett, emphasized the importance of team culture. He suggested that the incoming coaching staff should prioritize building connections with the players before focusing on corrections.
"My honest opinion is that we need coaches who understand the players' strengths and can inspire them to perform at their best. These athletes are already skilled; they need guidance and belief in their abilities."
Williams proposed several potential candidates to succeed Scott Robertson, including Jamie Joseph, Tony Brown, Dave Rennie, and Tana Umaga. The All Blacks face a challenging 2025 season, with tests against France, Ireland, and the formidable Springboks.
This isn't the first time Williams has spoken out about the need for diversity in coaching. In 2019, he called for more representation of brown faces in the All Blacks' coaching setup and NZ Rugby administration. He stands by this statement, emphasizing the need for a more inclusive environment.
"I understand this might be controversial, but I believe in the power of connection and belief. Players at this level need to trust their coaches and systems to perform at their peak."
Sir Steve Hansen, a former All Blacks coach, praised Williams, calling him "the best athlete I've coached. His dedication and off-field habits were exceptional."
Williams' influence extends beyond rugby; he is also a heavyweight boxing champion, joining an elite group of All Blacks who have achieved success in both sports.
