A powerful documentary is set to shine a light on the postcode rivalries in Bristol, giving a voice to the city's youth and addressing a critical issue that has long plagued the community.
'Postcodes': Unveiling the Truth Behind Bristol's Postcode Wars
In a bold move, two South Bristol communities, Knowle West and Hartcliffe, have joined forces to fund a hard-hitting documentary that delves into the long-standing rivalry between these areas and the BS13 and BS4 postcodes. The film, titled simply 'Postcodes', is directed by Bristol's own Neil Maggs and presented by Serena Wiebe, a young boxing mentor and knife crime campaigner from Easton. Serena, who has worked closely with the Government's task force on youth issues, has chaired meetings with influential figures like the Prime Minister, the King, and actor Idris Elba. Her recent recognition with the British Empire Medal for her anti-knife crime efforts further emphasizes the importance of this documentary.
"Bristol is an expensive city, yet it's riddled with wealth disparities and a shocking 16-year gap in life expectancy depending on where you live," Serena explains. "Recent headlines have painted Bristol in a negative light, and a significant factor in this is the postcode wars. Hartcliffe and Knowle West, two areas in the south, have been notorious for their rivalry. I wanted to go straight to the source, to the young people living in these communities, to understand the challenges and potential solutions to these wars."

Documentary-maker Neil Maggs emphasizes the unique approach of the film: "It's about letting the young people at the heart of this issue lead the conversation. Too often, adults dictate the narrative, but this film gives them a platform."

She's a young person with a unique perspective, having experienced similar issues in her own community and through her work with Empire Fighting Chance and the Government. It's a powerful statement that the community organizations at the heart of these communities, HWCP and the Knowle West Alliance, have commissioned this film. It's a step towards unity and finding solutions together."
The film's release is imminent, with screenings organized across Bristol and beyond. A central launch at the Watershed in March will mark the beginning of a series of community screenings.
"This documentary is a call to action, a chance for us to listen, understand, and work towards a brighter future for our youth."
